Fall is a time to enjoy cooler weather, outdoor fun, and the changing of seasons. Unfortunately, for too many of us it is associated with runny noses, congestion, itchy eyes, and cough due to Ragweed.

Global warming and climate change have influenced our weather patterns throughout the world; Not only did most cities in the US have a severe winter coined as the “POLAR VORTEX” but most cities then experienced severe pollen counts known as the “POLLEN VORTEX”.

Those of us living in the South East are particularly affected since both Baton Rouge and New Orleans were rated among the top 20 worst cities for fall allergies. Experts are anticipating another severe fall pollen season.

Here are some tips so that you can be prepared:

  1. When should we anticipate the start of fall allergies in the metro New Orleans area?
While the official fall season starts in late August to early September, it is usually delayed to Mid September in the South East.
  2. What can be done to get through the fall season?
While it’s impossible to completely escape pollen and molds, here are some other ways to lessen exposure.

    • Keep windows closed and use air-conditioning, including the AC in the car
    • Remember to change your home and auto air filters and replace them with high efficiency filters.
    • Don’t hang clothing outdoors to dry. Pollen may cling to towels and sheets.
    • Avoid outdoor exposure in the am; wear a mask when gardening or mowing the lawn. Shower after outdoor activity
  3. Is there a cure?
Over the counter medications can only reduce or mask symptoms. Allergy shots and newly approved allergy tablets can help desensitize your allergies. A board certified allergist can diagnose your allergies and put you on an effective regimen customized to fit your needs.
